UNEP Postpones International Conference On Chemicals Management

April 13, 2020
The conference is postponed for nine months because of the global Covid-19 crisis.

UNEP (United National Environmental Program) has adopted an “all hands on deck” approach to address the COVID-19 pandemic, postponing the fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) from October until July 2021, according to an article from Chemical Watch. Announcement of the postponement was reportedly sent to stakeholders for the UN’s voluntary Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

ICCM5 President Gertrud Sahler, from Germany's Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, says the move does not mean forgetting about other important global environmental challenges, according to the article, and will give the group more options to maintain dialogue and make further progress. An earlier round of negotiations scheduled for March was reportedly also postponed due to the coronavirus.
