The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plans to sell a tire this year with a 70% sustainable-material composition using bio-based and recycled chemical resources.
The company made the announcement after a Jan. 4 demonstration of a tire made from 90% sustainable materials. The demonstration has passed all applicable regulatory testing as well as Goodyear’s internal testing, according to the company.

Goodyear’s 90% sustainable-material demonstration tire includes 17 featured ingredients across 12 different components.
This tire also tested to have lower rolling resistance when compared to the reference tire, made with traditional materials. Lower rolling resistance means this demonstration tire has the potential to offer better fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction, the company said.
Bringing the 90% sustainable-material tire to market will require further collaboration with the company’s supply base to produce that specific tire at high volumes, according to the company.
The 90% sustainable tire includes 17 ingredients from various sources, including carbon black produced from methane, carbon dioxide, plant-based oil and end-of-life tire pyrolysis oil feedstocks; soybean oil; silica produced from husk waste residue; bio-renewable pine tree resins, recycled steel and recycled polyester.
