Chinese Students Take Over Teacher Selection

A chemical engineering school is the first to offer teacher selection in an effort to attract the best students.

A pilot program at China’s southeast Jiangxi University of Science and Technology will allow freshmen in the chemical engineering department to select their own teachers for the first time, according to an article from Fortune.  The teacher selection experiment is reportedly an effort to revitalize China’s “dreary” university scene and respond to complaints from students, particularly those who have studied abroad and find China’s traditional teaching style lacking. The program is aimed at students studying metallurgy and chemicals.

Students reportedly will be able to choose their teachers based on age, gender and personality. The university recently hired more instructors after surveying students, who largely indicated that they wanted teachers with “a funny, positive attitude” and under the age of 40.
