House Approves New Chemical Safety Rules

The House approved a chemical safety bill that gives the Environmental Protection Agency authority to evaluate and impose restrictions on thousands of household chemicals, according to an article from The Wall Street Journal. The bill is reportedly the first significant update to federal chemical safety law in 40 years.

The update to the existing Toxic Substances Control Act has the support of some environmentalists and the chemical industry, according to the article. Trade groups representing Dow, DuPont and others reportedly pushed for the legislation, which will provide uniformity not offered by the current patchwork of state regulations. The American Chemistry Council also voiced its approval of a nationwide regulatory system.
