Company to explore a new world-scale commercial advanced recycling investment

Sabic plans to produce 1 million metric tons of its Trucircle renewable polyethylene and polypropylene materials by 2030, the company said on Jan. 19.

To meet its 2030 target, Sabic is exploring a new world-scale advanced recycling plant that could process around 200 kilotons of circular materials per year and other projects, including a small-scale advanced recycling plant in Saudi Arabia.

Sabic will also work with its supply chain to meet its production goals, said Sabic CEO Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh.

 “Driving circularity for plastics will require a rapid transformation of the entire value chain, which is only possible through collective action, innovation, and collaboration across the industry and eco system of waste management,” he said. “Therefore, we are working hard with downstream and upstream partners to accelerate this process.”

Construction of the company’s first commercial circular polymers unit in Geleen, the Netherlands, is now entering the final stages. The company expects to deliver its first circular polymers in 2023.

Since 2020, SABIC’s certified circular polypropylene has been used in ice cream tubs and snack bar wraps for various brand names, including Mars and Kind snack bars.
