NASA Seeks Astronaut Candidates

The space agency selects qualified candidate from a diverse pool of U.S. citizens with a variety of backgrounds, including pilots, engineers, scientists and medical doctors.

If you think you’ve got the right stuff, NASA just might want to have a word with you. The space agency is accepting applications from December 14 through mid-February for its next class of astronauts, according to an announcement on the NASA site. Future astronauts will carry out deep space exploration missions that will advance a future human mission to Mars and may fly on one of several U.S. vessels including the International Space Station.

NASA selects qualified candidates from a diverse pool of U.S. citizens with a variety of backgrounds, including pilots, engineers, scientists and medical doctors, according to the site. Astronaut candidates must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable. There are currently 47 astronauts in the active astronaut corps. NASA expects to announce selected candidates in mid-2017.
