While it’s not news that there’s a gender diversity issue in the tech industry, new initiatives aimed at Gen Z females may help to close the gender gap, according to an article from TechCrunch. Top universities, such as UC Berkeley, are also reportedly seeing a rise in the number of freshmen women enrolled in STEM studies.
Among the initiatives aimed at K-12 girls is Code.org’s Hour of Code campaign designed to help young girls interested in computer science and coding. In 2013, the program reportedly attracted 15 million students in a week and more than half were girls. Other programs aimed at girls, according to the article, include Girls in Tech, which runs hackathons and coding bootcamps and helps connect women with tech jobs; Girls Who Code; Engineering Girls; Black Girls Code; the U.S. initiative Let Girls Learn and Google’s Made with Code.
