The results of a national technology and engineering test have surprised education experts. On the test administered under the purview of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, girls outscored boys in nearly every category, according to an article from U.S. News & World Report.
The girls outperformed the boys by three points overall, according to the article. On questions dealing with communication and collaboration, they reportedly outscored male students by five points, and on questions about information and communication technology, they outpaced them by six points. Female students reportedly tend to perform equal or worse than males on math and science achievement exams, according to an expert cited in the article, Peggy Carr, acting commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, a data arm of the Department of Education. Furthermore, the 2016 U.S. News/Raytheon STEM Index finds that male students express far more interest in pursuing engineering and technology than females. This is reportedly the first new assessment in 10 years.
