AIChE Honors Student For Environmental Research Paper

The AIChE award recognizes an outstanding original research paper that contributes to environmental protection through the application of chemical engineering.

Haotian Yang, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University, receives a national award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Yang was named the first-place winner for the 2022 Environmental Division Graduate Student Paper Award, reportedly recognizing his innovative research on nanoparticles.

According to the AIChE, the award “recognizes an outstanding original research paper that contributes to environmental protection through the application of chemical engineering.”

“His research led to the development of a new generation of nanoparticles to address environmental problems,” says Alexander Orlov, Yang’s PhD program supervisor and professor of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, in a press release from the university. The research was highlighted by Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Lab and touted as a significant development in nanomaterials synthesis. The work was also featured on the cover of “The Journal of Physical Chemistry C.”

Yang will be recognized in November during the Award Symposium at the AIChE National Meeting in Phoenix, where he will give an invited lecture to highlight the importance of his research to environmental protection. He will also receive a check for $500.
