Solazyme Receives Green Chemistry Honor

Nov. 5, 2014
Solazyme was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for its microalgae-based renewable oils and ingredients platform.

Solazyme, Inc., a renewable oil and bioproducts company, won the 2014 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for its platform technology to produce sustainable oils and products from microalgae for commercial use. Solazyme’s win represents the first time the technology, which harnesses the power of microalgae to produce high performing, sustainable, healthy and environmentally-friendly products, has been recognized by this award, according to the company.

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award promotes the environmental and economic benefits of developing and using novel green chemistry. The annual award recognizes technologies that incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture and use. Since its inception in 1996, the EPA in partnership with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute has received thousands of nominations from leading companies, entrepreneurs and academic researchers pioneering new discoveries.

“Green chemistry technologies have real world results – reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions while saving water and other scarce resources,” says Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest.

Solazyme produces renewable oil and whole algal products from microalgae that produce a variety of sustainable oils. The technology also provides the ability to produce multiple types of higher value sustainable oils regardless of season, geographic origin and feedstock source. Solazyme’s oils and ingredients are currently being sold commercially in a range of applications including food, fuel, home and personal care and industrial products.
