Fluoropolymer Recycling Plant Features Hima Emergency Shutdown System

June 11, 2015
Dyneon uses a HIMatrix safety controller in pilot project for sustainable recovery of raw material.

Recycling plant uses Hima safety controller.

Dyneon GmbH’s pilot plant to recycle end-of-life fluoropolymer materials in Burgkirchen, Germany features a HIMatrix safety controller from Hima as the emergency shutdown (ESD) system. The system is designed to safeguard the plant’s depolymerization reactor. If excess temperatures are reached, the safety system transitions the plant to a safe status to exclude the possibility of risks for people and the environment, according to Hima.

Dyneon uses technology for treating wastes for the sustainable recovery of raw material at its new, high-temperature recycling plant. Through pyrolysis, the perfluorinated, end-of-life waste is broken down into monomers, with a recovery rate of more than 90 percent, according to Hima. The monomers are fed into the distillation system and can be used for the production of new fluoropolymers.

The procedure for upcycling residual perfluorinated materials was developed jointly by Dyneon, the University of Bayreuth and the research institute InVertec. The project was partially funded by the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (Bundestiftung Umwelt).

The compact, modular HIMatrix safety controller was developed especially for applications that require from just a few I/Os to several hundred I/Os.
