Retiring Celanese CEO Wins Industry Award

March 5, 2012
Successor comes from Albemarle

David N. Weidman, chairman and CEO of Celanese Corp., will likely earn his final honor as head of the Dallas-based company on March 13 at the 2012 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) awards in New York City.

Weidman will receive the SCI Chemical Industry Medal, which is given for leadership, foresight, and contributions to applied chemistry that have fostered the growth of that industry.

“Dave Weidman has shown tremendous business leadership in an evolving, and often volatile, global economy,” says Stephanie A. Burns, chairman of SCI. “He led Celanese’s transformation from a German publicly traded company to an American publicly traded company and instilled in it a culture of continuous improvement, sustainability and safety.”

Weidman served as president and CEO since December 2004 and was appointed chairman by the board of directors in February 2007. At the end of 2011 he announced his retirement.

He will remain with the company through April 2, 2012. Celanese’s board of directors has appointed Mark C. Rohr as his successor as CEO, and will appoint Rohr as chairman, both effective as of April 2.

Rohr previously held the positions of CEO and chairman of Albemarle until Sept. 1, 2011. Rohr joined Albemarle in 1999 and served in a variety of leadership and executive positions.
