Developments span a variety of construction-related products
The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3), Bonn, Germany, has revealed the finalists for the first edition of its Innovation Challenge, which focused on construction-related developments. It selected eight entries from the 47 it received from 26 countries. The winner will receive a €25,000 prize.
The finalists are:
Block Solutions, Finland, for block modules from wood fiber biocomposite that can be used to build housing;
Ecoact Tanzania, Tanzania, for durable plastic timbers produced by transforming post-consumer plastic garbage and packaging materials;
Ecovon, Ghana, for a formaldehyde-free, bio-based renewable wood alternative made from coconut husk and sugar cane bagasse;
Glassolina, Egypt, for composite sheets with superior properties produced from wood and plastic waste;
Mesocarpe, Germany, for its active biodegradable membrane made from renewable resources and minerals that can filter indoor air for pollutants and bacteria;
Reuse Design Laboratory, U.S.A., for a lightweight, isolative masonry block system containing up to 90% recycled drywall waste;
SUMTEQ, Germany, for affordable, high-performance insulation material based on polymer nanofoams; and
Zila Works, U.S.A., for its 100% BPA-free epoxy resin made from industrial hemp that’s suitable for use in composites, coatings and other industrial applications.
Each finalist will receive a travel grant to participate in expert workshops and make a presentation at Investor Forum 2020 on October 22, 2020. The winner will be selected after that.
