Covestro Signs 90-MW Solar Deal to Power Baytown Site

June 5, 2023
Company expects to offset 70,000 tons of CO2 emissions at the facility using renewable energy.

Danish clean-energy producer Orsted will supply Covestro’s Baytown, Texas, site with 90 MW of solar power beginning in 2024, the companies said on June 5.

The 15-year agreement secures a portion of power from Orsted’s 471-MW Mockingbird Solar Center in Lamar County, Texas. The solar power plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2024. Covestro expects the renewable energy to offset 70,000 tons of carbon emissions annually, reducing Scope 2 emissions from its third-largest production site.

The polymer materials producer noted that the announcement comes shortly after its Baytown plant received ISCC Plus certification. The certification is a voluntary program that verifies the use of feedstocks derived from renewable energy sources.

“These two initiatives represent our focus on sustainability and the strategic path we have set to minimize our carbon footprint across Covestro’s operations in the United States,” said Haakan Jonsson, chairman and president of Covestro LLC in a news release. “Cumulatively, projects like this help us realize our path to becoming fully circular.”

The company has set a goal to become climate neutral by 2035.
