BASF has broken ground on the final phase of an expansion project that will increase its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity to about 600,000 metric tons per year at its Verbund site in Geismar, Louisiana, the company said on Jan. 11.
The company expects the $1 billion project to be completed by 2025. When complete, it will support the ongoing growth of its North American MDI customers.
BASF launched the project in 2018. The first two phases included start-up of a new MDI synthesis unit and expansion of several existing upstream units. The third and final phase will add new upstream units and a splitter. The project includes the implementation of advanced digitalization technologies, according to the company.
