Facility directly converts natural gas to ethylene through OCM.

Siluria Technologies opens a demonstration plant in La Porte, Texas that produces ethylene directly from natural gas through oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). The facility is co-located at a plant operated by Braskem America, Inc. The demonstration plant is the final scale-up of the OCM process technology and paves the way for Siluria to deploy commercial-scale plants in the 2017/2018 timeframe, according to the company.

Siluria’s OCM technology directly converts natural gas to ethylene. This enables natural gas to supplement petroleum as the basis for commodity fuels, chemicals and plastics. Siluria’s catalytic process is more scalable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective in many settings than current methods of production, according to the company.
