Women Engineering Grads Outnumber Men At Dartmouth

June 24, 2016
For the first time, Dartmouth College awards more than half of engineering bachelor’s degrees to women.

For the first time, a majority of engineering bachelor’s degrees at Dartmouth University are going to women, according to an article from the Concord Monitor. It is also reportedly the first time in 50 years that any major U.S. research university’s graduating class of engineering undergraduates is more than 50% female.  Last weekend, 119 Dartmouth undergraduates received a bachelor’s degree in engineering and 64 of those, or 54%, went to women.

According to the article, Dartmouth’s undergraduate population has remained relatively stable for years and evenly divided by gender. The percentage of women receiving engineering undergraduate degrees has reportedly increased as the overall number of engineering BA degrees has risen, indicating that women are not supplanting men but rather shifting into engineering from other majors.
