Members of the Senate science and commerce committee introduce the American Competitiveness and Innovation Act, a bipartisan bill that reauthorizes National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) programs and fine-tunes other science education policies, according to an article from Science. The bill, a two-year undertaking, is the proposed replacement for the expired 2010 America COMPETES Act.
The bill reportedly more closely reflects the community’s view of the federal role in research and education than House legislation adopted in the past year. According to the article, the bill “endorses NSF’s current approach to choosing what research to fund, urges the executive branch to find ways to reduce the amount of time that universities and scientists spend complying with rules governing recipients of federal research dollars” and advocates the expansion of NSF’s popular Innovation Corps program.
