Dozens of prominent researchers are defending Charles Lieber, the embattled head of chemistry at Harvard University who faces charges of hiding the receipt of millions of dollars in research funding from China from the university and the U.S. government, according to an article from Chemistry World. Lieber, who reportedly denies the charges, was arrested more than a year ago and placed on indefinite leave from the institution.
According to the article, Lieber – a nanoscience pioneer – was indicted on charges of making false statements about his involvement in a Chinese program to attract, recruit and cultivate high-level talent from abroad. Lieber’s supporters, which reportedly include many Nobel Prize winners, are calling the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) case against him “unjust” and rallying in an open letter for the “tragically misguided government campaign” to be dropped.
