A new report from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) finds that “pervasive” inequalities derail the academic careers of U.K. Black and minority ethnic chemists, according to an article from The Guardian. The report indicates that Black and minority ethnic chemists are paid less than their white peers and are less likely to receive research funding at critical junctures in their careers.
According to the article, there is only one Black professor of chemistry of the 575 professors working in U.K. universities, despite Black students being well-represented at the undergraduate level. The RSC reportedly will establish a new race and ethnicity unit, with £1.5m funding, to drive systemic change and increased diversity.
