Naval midshipmen are helping to send the STEM message to underserved middle schoolers in Baltimore as part of Summer Heroes Youth Program (SHYP), a pilot STEM camp that hosts 50 Baltimore City students at the Naval Academy. According to an article from the Capital Gazette, Midshipmen SHYP leaders use sports themes to teach geometry lessons, such as the velocity of a baseball, and also cover health and fitness topics and life skills.

According to the article, unrest in Baltimore last year prompted the academy to focus efforts there. The program, which reportedly can cost as much as $25,000 for supplies, busing and food, not including labor, is paid for by the STEM Center and the academy’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
