U.S. Chem Grads Face Improved Job Prospects

July 8, 2015
Chemistry graduates in the U.S. should enjoy improved employment prospects as the unemployment rate drops.

Chemistry graduates in the U.S. should enjoy better employment prospects according to an article from ChemistryWorld. The improved outlook is based on figures from the American Chemistry Society’s (ACS) annual graduate survey, which cites a stronger job market, with unemployment falling from almost 15% to 12.4%.

Despite the improved numbers, the outlook for recent chemistry grads is far from rosy. The article notes that unemployment among recent graduates is still about four times that of ACS members. Chemistry grads who hold bachelor's degrees receive median salaries some 2.6% ahead of inflation; however, new masters and PhD holders lag behind inflation, according to the data presented.  The ACS research also reveals that new female chemistry graduates earned 7.3% less than their male counterparts last year, while new female chemical engineers received a salary 3% higher than recent male graduates in the same field.
