CFATS Webinar Will Offer Valuable Insights

Jan. 31, 2011
As we head into a new year and new Congress for CFATS, I think we can expect to see some changes and progress. As we have discussed, the Republican leadership in the House has a different approach to the mandates and the new leader of the House Homeland Security Committee, Peter King (R. NY) has said that any permanent anti-terrorism security mandates of U.S. chemical companies will not include Inherently Safer Technologies (IST) language.

That's a change from the last Congress which was headed up by democrats in the House.

On the compliance side of things, we are getting more and more information from DHS and the industry in general as more companies enter the CFATS process at all levels and tiers. We know more about preauthorization visits and the information that DHS needs for final authorization. We also have a better idea of how to approach DHS, what information to have available and what to be ready to discuss and demonstrate.

So, with all of these changes in legislation and new information on compliance issues it is more important than ever for us to be sharing information, news and ideas. We will be offering a complementary CFATS webinar, CFATS: Controlling Security Costs & Latest Regulatory Updates. There will be two speakers including me -- William E. Allmond IV, Vice President, Government Relations, Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates, Washington, DC, will review the latest updates on material modifications and personal surety and more. And Steve Roberts, Roberts Law Group, will discuss the interaction with DHS Inspectors; Corporate and Site Preparation for CFATS Authorization Visits I will be discussing capital vs. operating costs, asset vs. facility, value engineering and more.

The webinar will be held at 1 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 17, 2011. It will last for 60 minutes and should give you a good update on CFATS legislation and compliance issues. We want to give you some practical advice from people who have worked with companies and facilities going through the CFATS process. We will have information for all tier levels 1 - 4.

You can sign up now and reserve yourself a spot. Make sure to bring your experiences and questions, as I always emphasize we all need to be talking and sharing. It is the best way for the industry to keep its facilities, employees and community safe and secure.
