There are myriad good things about the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), including the many creative ways businesses in the chemical industry choose to celebrate. The most recent tip of the hat to IYC is from Elsevier, publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services. The company announced an essay competition for young chemists to celebrate IYC.

Participants are asked to write an essay on “How can chemistry contribute to solving the challenge of developing sustainable resources (water, energy, food) in the 21st century?” The essays, which must be no longer than 1,000 words, will be evaluated by a panel of Elsevier judges. The first place winner will receive an Apple iPad, second place will receive a Kindle, and third place will receive a $150 Elsevier books gift certificate.

All entries must be e-mailed as a Word or PDF attachment to [email protected] by 11:59 p.m. ET on June 30, 2011. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are no older than 27, and who are enrolled in an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.
