Chemical Companies Warned about Fraudulent Letters from FBI

July 15, 2011

I ran across this warning from the FBI.  Apparently, members of the chemical community are asked to be on the lookout after two U.S. based chemical companies received letters from an entity claiming to be FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III.  The fraudulent letters were emailed to two major chemical companies located in Missouri and Virginia asking that the companies send $350 to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to pay for a Clearance Certificate.

The letter threatened legal actions including questioning by an FBI agent, arrest and detainment unless the recipients responded within 24 hours.

Both letters had the same point of contact, “Rev. Frank Tim Kelly” claiming to be the principal legal advisor of DHS, listing two separate emails for contact and asking funds to be sent to a Los Angeles office building.  The letters were also stamped with the FBI Seal and FBI Director Mueller’s signature.  The letter sent to the chemical company in Missouri also included a seal for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria.

The FBI is warning members of the chemical industry, especially chemical companies, to beware of these fraudulent letters and critical of all requests to help maintain chemical security, even from what may appear to be a government agency.
