With the coronavirus quickly spreading throughout the world, we are living during an unprecedented global pandemic. My college, The Ohio State University, cancelled all in-person classes for the remainder of the semester, switching entirely to online courses. Ohio’s governor, Mike DeWine, ordered all schools, bars, and restaurants to close until further notice. And as of 11:59 p.m. March 23, we’ve also been summoned to observe a stay-at-home order to help stem the spread of the virus. Similar measures are being taken by governors throughout the country.

With kids now home from school for possibly the rest of the school year, parents have been tasked with homeschooling duties. I suspect they are learning it’s not an easy feat. But in these uncharted waters it calls for non-traditional means. You can make nearly everything a teachable moment. In fact, one Etsy shop -- ¡Que interesante!, created a clever way to keep kids both educated and entertained. Kids can now color with chemistry crayons. You can purchase colored labels (to blend in to crayon label) to place over your Crayola crayons. Included with the labels is a sheet with information about which chemical goes with which color and a chemistry lesson for the non-chemical person. Each label is based on the element that, when inflamed, produces the corresponding color.
Since kids have to partake in social distancing, why not help them learn and have fun at the same time? Check out the Etsy site for more information. And I’m sure if you searched the internet, you’d find other places selling similar labels.
