The awards enable students with a research interest in green chemistry to go to an ACS scientific conference.

Four U.S. graduate students, including one seeking a doctorate in chemical engineering, have received 2013 Ciba Travel Awards in Green Chemistry. Administered by the Green Chemistry Institute of the American Chemical Society, Washington, D.C., the awards enable students with a research interest in green chemistry to go to an ACS scientific conference, thus offering opportunities to attend symposia, network and present their research.

The annual awards, established in 2009, provide each recipient with $2,000 to help cover expenses for going to a meeting related to green chemistry.

The recipients are:

  • Angela Holmberg, a chemical engineering graduate student at the University of Delaware, who is working on bio-based polymers;
  • Matthew DeNardo of Carnegie Mellon University, who is developing chemicals that are alternatives to chlorine-based technologies;
  • Avinav Nandgaonkar of North Carolina State University, who is focusing on bio-synthesis of carbon-based materials and greener dye degradation; and
  • Jing Zhang of North Dakota State University, who is researching chemical synthesis using ruthenium-based catalysts.
