Celanese Earns ACC Accolades; Emulsions Business Is On The Move

July 6, 2011
The Responsible Care Company of the Year has reduced energy intensity and increased safety.

In early June Celanese Corp. was awarded The American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care Company of the Year Award. The honor recognizes an ACC-member company that has enhanced and embraced the Responsible Care ethic of performance improvement and sustainability.

To be eligible for the Responsible Care Company of the Year award, a firm must show exemplary achievement in meeting a number of Responsible Care performance requirements, including: a safety performance rating in the top 10% of companies in its size category, with zero significant process incidents in the previous year and no fatalities in at least three years; a positive trend in performance measures; and a demonstrated commitment to product stewardship goals. The company also must actively promote the Responsible Care ethic to stakeholders at the local, regional and national levels.

In 2010, Celanese exceeded each of its five-year goals, reducing energy intensity by 26%, greenhouse gases by 35%, waste intensity by more than 70% and air emissions by more than 40%. Most significantly, Celanese’s 2010 global OSHA injury rate was 0.15, surpassing its 2010 goal of 0.22.

In other news, its Emulsion Polymers business is moving to a facility in the greater Cincinnati area. Celanese Emulsions will join technology teams from Ticona, the engineering polymers business of Celanese, and Celanese EVA Performance Polymers at the site in Florence, Ky.

The targeted completion for the move from the Houston Technology Center (HTC) to the Ticona site in Florence is October 2011.

The Emulsion Polymers business also recently expanded its vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) unit in Nanjing, China. The expansion, which doubles the original capacity of the VAE unit, came online in the second quarter.

Celanese has eight units at the Celanese Nanjing Chemical Complex and more are planned. The company also celebrated the opening of the Celanese Shanghai Commercial and Technology Center that opened earlier this year.
