The guide introduces the topic by discussing the construction of electromagnetic flowmeters. It explains how magmeter durability depends on the selection of proper materials for a given application. Factors governing selection are the chemicals being measured, as well as their temperature, abrasive characteristics, and sanitary requirements.

The guide continues with a discussion of cleaning materials that could affect the integrity of liners and electrodes. It notes that steam cleaning should be limited to 300°F (149°C) for meters lined with Teflon and meters with ceramic bodies. Polyurethane or rubber-lined meters should not be exposed to steam cleaning. Other adverse effects of steam cleaning include sudden temperature changes such as rapid cooling.
