A new study from the Trade Partnership Worldwide finds that imports into the United States support more than 21 million net American jobs across the country, including a net positive in every U.S. state. The report, “Imports Work for American Workers,” considers not only the jobs lost to imports but also those supported by imports, which the study authors suggest should figure into the public policy debate.
Other key findings:
- Two of every three net import-related jobs pay middle class wages;
- Eight million import-related jobs are held by minorities;
- Imports also provide employment to 2.5 million workers represented by unions;
- Most of these jobs belong to small- to medium-sized employers.
“The number of U.S. jobs dependent on imports is a significant revelation, as it comes at a time when discussions regarding supply chains, reshoring, and protecting American interests have become focused on reducing U.S. imports, like from trading partners like China,” remarks American Chemistry Council Director of International Trade Ed Brzytwa in a May 21 blog post. The American Chemistry Council is a sponsor of the study.
