Summary

Managing process safety in the chemical industry is complicated due to extensive regulatory requirements and the challenge of handling an evolving chemical inventory. Compliance with rules like OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) or the UK’s Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) requires detailed knowledge of the chemicals used. However, many chemical product names do not reveal all of their ingredients, making it difficult to ensure compliance with hazardous chemical regulations that require visibility at the ingredient level.

PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), or "forever chemicals," are under increasing global scrutiny due to their harmful environmental and health impacts. The U.S. EPA continues to add more PFAS chemicals to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) list as the science and research becomes available, triggering reporting requirements for even small amounts. Ingredient-level visibility is essential for meeting regulations like the EPA’s Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) and Extremely Hazardous Substances (EHSs). It is also a crucial foundation for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management when dealing with Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs), which protect workers from dangerous chemical exposures. Without an easy way of seeing ingredients and flagging chemicals with OELs, you may be placing your employees at risk and receive violations and associated fines.

Getting ingredient-level information about your chemical inventory is foundational to achieve better regulatory compliance but can be hard to achieve without the proper tools. The days of manually reviewing safety data sheets (SDSs) are outdated, time-consuming, and subject to human error. Chemical management software with ingredient-level indexing allows professionals to track chemicals according to their specific hazards. This approach enhances operational safety management, supports regulatory compliance efforts, improves risk management, and contributes to a company’s EHS or ESG goals.

During this panel session on March 12, VelocityEHS experts Kristi Hames, CIH, CSP, and Lyn Ip will cover:

  • A background on regulations
  • How the increasing scrutiny of “forever chemicals” affects you and your company
  • Challenges with documentation
  • Ways to achieve proper ingredient visibility
  • How software can simplify hazardous chemical tracking and contribute to workplace safety, compliance, and company EHS or ESG goals
