Exida has released a book called Practical SIL Target Selection - Risk Analysis Per the IEC 61511 Safety Lifecycle. Authored by Exida’s Heidi Hartmann, Dr. Eric Scharpf and Hal Thomas, the book describes how to use risk analysis and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) target selection to evaluate process hazards and determine proper risk reductions.

This authoritative reference also explains how to follow the IEC 61508 / 61511 functional safety lifecycle as well as elevated SIL. Other topics include risk management and risk tolerance, identifying hazards and potential safety instrumented functions, simplified and quantitative layers of protection and various methods for SIL target selection.

“Inadequate SIL target selection can cost large amounts of money and sometimes even lives," said Heidi Hartmann, Exida senior safety engineer. "However, these costs can usually be prevented by applying the relatively basic techniques presented in the text.”
