Longhorns Are First To Offer Computational Engineering Major

UT Austin’s computational engineering degree focuses on modeling and simulation.

The University of Texas at Austin becomes the first university in the United States to offer computational engineering as a major at the undergraduate level, according to an article from eCampusNews. Computational engineering is reportedly a new field that focuses on modeling and simulation to develop solutions for society.

According to the article, the Cockrell School of Engineering‘s Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics will offer the program. An interdisciplinary curriculum will reportedly enable students to work on “complex 21st-century engineering problems within real-world applications.” eCampusNews reports that students might work on assignments such as developing computer models for locating oil and gas reserves and smart energy design. Career fields for UT Austin computational engineering graduates include energy, manufacturing, aerospace, health care and microelectronics, according to the article.
