Polyethylene prices in Mexico reached two-year lows in the first week of January, according to a report by Reuters Events.
Prices were above $1,000 per ton, but winter weather during the week of Dec. 23 impacted polyethylene plants and facilities that produce feedstocks, according to a market source quoted by Reuters. Subzero temperatures can negatively impact natural gas flows, the source told Reuters.
“In this sense the main producers were impacted,” the market source told Reuters, citing names of five companies that include some the biggest U.S. petrochemical manufacturers in the U.S. The source said some manufacturers alerted their customers and distributors about weather-related issues impacting production and distribution.
Resins demand may improve in the second quarter of 2023, according to the source.
