German officials are investigating several companies suspected of sending “dual use” chemicals to Russia, according to an article from Chemistry World. Dual use chemicals have civilian and military applications. The compounds in question reportedly can be used to make chemical and biological weapons.

According to the article, the firms didn’t have the required permits for the transactions and had been on the radar of authorities for some time. The export of chemicals and laboratory supplies reportedly had been ongoing over a period of years. The traded chemicals included diethylamine, a potential precursor used to make chemical weapons, and aflatoxin, a potential biological threat agent.
