It appears that science backs New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the case of the underinflated footballs – or at least scientists do. Nearly two dozen engineering and technology professors weighed in on Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for “Deflategate” and filed papers supporting the petition for rehearing, according to an article from ABC News. During the 2015 AFC Championship game, the NFL found that the Patriots' footballs had lost pressure on the way to New England’s decisive rout of the Indianapolis Colts.
According to the article, the professors said deflation happens naturally when a football moves from a warm environment to a cold one, and, “this is not tampering; it’s science.” The legal brief was reportedly filed on behalf of 21 professors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, University of Michigan, Stanford University, University of Southern California, University of Delaware, Purdue University, University of Pennsylvania, Boston College and the University of Minnesota.
