Chemical Reaction Triggers Explosions At Pharmaceutical Plant

A chemical reaction triggers a series of explosions that closed PCI Synthesis in Newburyport, Mass.

A chemical reaction triggered a series of small explosions at PCI Synthesis in Newburyport, Mass. last week, temporarily closing the pharmaceutical plant, according to an article from The Daily News. No injuries were reported but the explosions caused the evacuation of several nearby buildings.

According to The Daily News, fire investigators determined that the explosions occurred during a product sampling procedure. A spokesperson for PCI Synthesis quoted in the article says the incident did not lead to the release of any hazardous materials and safety systems worked properly. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), which fined the company in 2015 for a “serious” violation, has opened an investigation.
