The American Chemical Society (ACS) will host an ACS Kids Zone teach-in tent on April 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the 2018 March for Science on the National Mall. The teach-in tent will promote the annual Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) public awareness campaign, which serves the ACS' key goal of fostering understanding and appreciation of science by the public, the media and policymakers. Since 2003, ACS has conducted CCEW as a nationwide celebration of the positive impact that chemistry has had on society and the environment. This year's CCEW theme is "Dive into Marine Chemistry."

"ACS continues to support science in the U.S. and celebrate its role in improving people's lives, protecting our nation, encouraging economic growth and driving innovation," says Glenn S. Ruskin, director of external affairs & communications at ACS. "When we as a nation invest in science and education, we are investing in our future and strengthening our leadership role in the world."

The ACS Kids Zone activities, based loosely on the 2018 CCEW theme, will include:

  • Lose the Blues with CO2: Participants can test how much carbon dioxide is in the air.
  • UV-Detecting Beads: Using UV-detecting beads and UV blockers, visitors can explore which products help protect skin, eyes and medicine from being damaged by UV light.
  • Magic Nuudles: Using biodegradable building blocks made from cornstarch, kids create fun shapes out of Magic Nuudles and learn about polymers.
  • Children will also get a giveaway bag with a printed issue of Celebrating Chemistry, ACS' biannual children's publication with fun hands-on activities and articles, as well as other goodies.
