Total Petrochemicals and Refining is found guilty of negligence in accident that caused the worker to lose his leg.

A jury found Total Petrochemicals and Refining guilty of negligence in a workplace accident that caused a 27-year-old Baton Rouge, Louisiana man to lose his leg four years ago, according to an article from The Advocate. Logan Milstead’s leg was crushed by a 6,000-pound counterweight when the loading dock he was working on collapsed. The jury reportedly awarded Milstead $37.1 million.

According to the lawsuit cited in the article, Milstead was employed as a dockman for Total Petrochemicals and tested chemicals as they were transferred between the plant and the barges and ships that moored the company's floating dock along the Mississippi River. The device that transferred chemicals between the barge and the plant reportedly failed leading to the accident. Total Petrochemicals says it intends to appeal the decision.
