The European Federation of Chemical Engineering, Brussels, has honored Miguel André Abreu Teixeira with its Excellence Award in Product Design and Engineering. He won the award for his thesis on modeling odor perception, which promises to speed the formulation of fragrances and reduce their cost.

He developed a model that relates the complex process of odor perception to basic physical properties. The simplified model makes it much easier and quicker to predict the performance and smell of perfumed products compared to other methods.

Teixeira, currently a fragrance insight analyst at International Flavors & Fragrances in The Netherlands, wrote the thesis “Perfume Performance and Classification: Perfumery Quaternary-Quinary Diagram (PQ2D) and Perfumery Radar” while working toward his doctorate at University of Porto, Portugal.

The award includes a €1,500 prize.
