House Passes Chemical Safety Measure

After nearly 40 years, the Toxic Substances Control Act is headed for a refresh. The House recently passed a measure that would update and strengthen the 1976 bill, according to an article in The New York Times.

The law is intended to protect people from exposure to toxic chemicals but has been criticized as outdated and toothless by environmental activists and the chemical industry, notes the article. The Senate is next up and expected to take up a companion bill in July. Together, the bills would require the Environmental Protection Agency to start studying the health ramifications of some 60,000 chemicals used in commerce
