Corning And NiTech Demo Joint Continuous-Flow System

July 8, 2015
Flow-Cal, Inc. will hold its 16th annual Flow-Cal Users Group Conference July 20-23 in Seattle.

Corning Incorporated and NiTech Solutions Limited demonstrate a continuous processing system that integrates the Corning Advanced-Flow reactor (AFR) and the NiTech continuous crystallizer with Alconbury Weston Limited (AWL) continuous filtration equipment. The integrated system provides a global solution for continuous synthesis and downstream processes for pharmaceutical, fine and specialty chemical companies. The demonstration proves intensification of chemical processes in continuous flow and is now industry ready, according to the companies.

Corning also demonstrates its capabilities by testing the crystallization and filtration of aspirin synthesis. Full conversion and high purification of aspirin are obtained at more than 60 grams per hour without further optimization, according to Corning. After a few days, the demonstration reportedly delivers high efficiency by combining a NiTech crystallizer with Corning’s Advanced-Flow reactor technology. Continuous filtration is also achieved using the AWL continuous filtration unit. The test was performed at lab scale using Corning’s Advanced-Flow G1 reactor and the DN15-Lite NiTech crystallizer. Corning says it can be transferred to industrial production involving thousands of tons per year.
