Co-founder and CEO of the American Sustainable Business Council, David Levine suggests in his article at The Hill that the EPA should do more to prevent chemical disasters that threaten local economies. According to the article, of the 12,500 hazardous chemical facilities covered by the EPA’s Risk Management Program (RMP), as many as 466 pose a catastrophic hazard to 100,000 or more people.
Proposed changes to RMP focus on addressing facility safety after catastrophes occur and minimizing the impact, according to the article. Instead, says the author, new chemical security rules should include prevention and information sharing in order to mitigate the risks.
