“Can I mix these chemicals?” It’s a question that, if answered incorrectly, can have devastating results. New technology developed by engineers at the University of California, Riverside, aims to eliminate the confusion and reduce the subsequent danger, according to an article from the university.
ChemStor, an open source software program, reportedly draws from an Environmental Protection Agency library of 9,800 chemicals, to tell users whether it’s unsafe to mix certain chemicals. According to the article, the Centers for Disease Control estimates 4,500 injuries a year are caused by the mixture of incompatible pool cleaning chemicals, with half of these occurring in homes. Even when workers are trained in safe storage protocols, accidents still occur often when chemicals are improperly disposed of in the same waste container.
