In late 2020, Marathon Petroleum Corporation (Marathon) began the production of renewable diesel at its Dickinson refinery in North Dakota. Marathon now reports successful completion of the refinery’s test run of a grassroots renewable diesel unit, according to a news release from Haldor Topsoe. The new HydroFlex unit reportedly produces 100% renewable diesel from soy and corn oil with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day. Topsoe says its HydroFlex technology enables Marathon to convert low-carbon renewable feedstocks into cleaner fuel alternatives.
With HydroFlex, customers can reportedly convert low value feedstocks to renewable fuels that qualify for the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credit. The process layout offers lower capital expenditure (CAPEX) and lower energy consumption during operation, resulting in a lower Carbon Index (CI), according to the company. Topsoe’s HydroFlex reportedly can be deployed in both grassroots units and revamps for co-processing or stand-alone applications.
