A leaking tank outside Weylchem U.S. Inc.’s chemical plant in Kershaw County, S.C., led to officials shutting down a 10-mile stretch of highway around the facility last week, according to an article from ABC Columbia. The company and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) both released statements regarding the hazmat situation.
According to the article, the company says they evacuated the facility immediately as a safety precaution. A preliminary report from Weylchem reportedly attributes a plume of smoke in the area to a vapor mix of nitric acid and nitrogen oxides (NOx). No injuries were reported and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
