Brookfield Engineering Marks 80 Years in Business

The company was built around a new instrument to measure viscosity.

Brookfield Engineering is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2014. Donald Brookfield, Sr. founded the company in 1934 around an instrument designed for viscosity measurement and control. The company would later address issues of temperature control, small sample volumes and very low viscosities as it adapted to changing industry needs.

Brookfield Engineering responded to the rise in technology with a wide range of digital and programmable viscometers and rheometers that operated in stand-alone or PC controlled modes, according to the company.  It also developed a complete range of in-line process viscometers that enabled manufacturers to measure viscosity continuously during production.

In 2004, Brookfield entered the texture analysis market, providing a complement to its line of R&D and QC testing instrumentation. The CT3 texture analyzer initially targeted the food manufacturing industry, but was later expanded to measure the mechanical flow properties of a wide variety of products in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and packaging.

In 2010, the PFT powder flow tester was introduced. Most recently, Brookfield has added touch screen technology to several of its most popular instruments.
