Despite a boom in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs over the past 30 years, a significant disparity in representation still exists along gender and racial lines. But some cities are doing a better job diversifying their STEM workforces than others, according to an article from MoneyTalksNews, which reveals the results of SmartAsset’s fifth annual study on the 10 best cities for diversity in STEM.
According to the article, the study analyzed data for 35 U.S. cities with the largest STEM workforces, measuring across metrics of racial and gender diversity. Despite a gender imbalance, Oakland, California took the number one spot in the survey, followed by Boston, Massachusetts; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.; Washington, D.C., and New York, New York.
