The practicing engineer is required to provide safe, practical and timely solutions to ERS design problems without having the opportunity to study the topic in depth. This technical note attempts to provide a comprehensive review of ERS fundamentals, definitions and design principles to allow the solution of cases encountered in normal practice. For more complex cases or when in doubt reference should be made to an appropriate authority or specialist in the field.
