BASF Film On Efficient Biogas Treatment

Film looks at biogas and its increasing importance as a major energy resource.

BASF has released a film called “Clean Gas from Waste,” which looks at biogas and its role as a major energy mix resource. In the four-minute piece, BASF customer Verbio AG, Germany’s leading biofuel manufacturer, serves as an example to help describe the increasing importance of biogas and how to make its use more efficient.

Biogas is obtained by fermenting the most diverse substrates such as domestic waste, plants or sewage sludge. Depending on the starting material, the gas mix this generates contains only 50 to 70% useful methane. The rest is made up by gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which can cause corrosion.

As a result, the gas must be purified before being fed to the natural gas grid. BASF offers a gas treatment process for this, which Verbio is current using. The process also allows CO2 and H2S to be captured without measurable methane loss. The basis of the process is a chemical scrubbing agent that BASF sells under the name Oase green.
